Don’t let your fears hold you back from being successful… I had a conversation today with my friend and she was telling me how she thought that I didn’t pursue my cake business because I was afraid to take the next step. I spent all this time improving my cakes and it’s a waste to do nothing with it. She thinks that I’m going to do the same thing with my photography; get really good but when the time comes to take it to the next level, let my fears get the best of me. Hmmm…. there is some truth in that! I do have fears; of disappointing clients, of disappointing myself… But this is not why I put my cake business on pause.
While I was working at the bakery I had fell out of love with cake decorating! We were making the same kind of cakes over and over again, which slowly killed the fun of it. When I was given freedom to design, I ran with it so my cake love slowly returned, but that was pretty rare. There’s only so far that you can go without going all the way and opening up your own bakery, & I’m just not ready to commit yet! I’m not going to be rushed or pressured into making this big decision! I have a young son so I need flexibility & this leads me to the world of photography! I have always had an appreciation for good photography, but it exploded after I had our engagement photo session and I saw how much fun you can have! This is a business that you can do out of your house and make your own schedule! Hello Flexibility! But I am human & I do have Fears... I have to start from the bottom, I have to meet new people and hide my nervousness and try to make them feel comfortable! I’m working on not letting my fears get the best of me! I always tend to set my goals high… I jumped in to the world of fondant before I learned how to ice a cake -because I saw the shows on tv and wanted to learn to do what they do. I follow some successful photographers who have great work and I set standards for myself & strive to get great photos like them. I am my biggest critique! I decided to take the next little step and I asked my best friends Alex & Darlene to do an engagement session for me tomorrow, they’re already married but they never had an engagement session so I hope I don’t let them down! This is me stepping out of my comfort zone… wish me luck!

I'M JANELLE MARINA
Wife, Mama Shark, + Photographer. Most days, you'll find me in mismatched socks and a top knot, working behind my computer with a smile on my face, listening to Zac Brown Band and R&B --or, dancing in the kitchen with my 3 littles and hunka husband, seeing who could come up with the coolest dance moves. I'm a wedding photographer, West Elm lover, aspiring advocate for our buddies with special needs, and a Certified Dreamer since 1986. We live in a cozy city in Southern California and are always up for a good adventure. I enjoy telling stories with my camera, grubbing on spicy food, and solving the latest Dateline case.
