When I first began photography back in 2011 I went crazy experimenting with editing styles! I added different presets on every other photo -you'd never think that they were all from photo session! A little Sepia here, black and white with a splash of color there, oh and you can't forget about those vintage presets! Oh Lawdy! It took me a year to get that out of my system and find my groove. At the end of the day the style that never got old to me was the fresh clean crisp look. Which I now refer to as my "Modern" style, it's bright with warm vibrant colors! That has been my go to look for the last 4 years, but lately Ive been having a wondering eye... ... for FILM!!!! Oh sweet film how I love thee and all that you do! You and your soft melts of pastel colors that goosh romance!!! So dreamy! Why do you have to be so doggone expensive! Man! I'd have to sell my first born child just to be able to buy a nice film camera and all of your pretty little rolls to just keep my business afloat until I built a clientele that would want to make that type of investment! Holy Cow you are too fancy! ... I digress! So low and behold I introduce to you the next best thing... the ever so glorious "digital" film!!! Awwwww!!!! I can say that I have come to like it just as much as I like the vibrant "modern" look! But I can't bring myself to completely transform, sooooo instead I thought "hey, why not give my wonderful clients the options of both and they can select the one that they like the most!?!" Ding! Ding! Ding! we have a winner!!!! This new editing style will be called "Timeless" because its extremely similar to that classic look of film that never goes out of style. And if you don't like either than go ahead and skedaddle lol!
If you visit my WEDDING Gallery page you can view the two different slideshows of the new style options. Below are a few examples of what you'll see...

When Promise asked me to be apart of her new fashion series for 2015 I was so SHOCKED! I've worked with her before at her Go Live workshops but never did I think that would lead to me photographing her one on one. Let me just give you a little overview of why I was super intimidated -well for starters she is the sister to the uber talented photographers Aimee & Troy Grover (huge deal), she is also great friends with my first photog idol Jasmine Star (another major deal in the industry), AND to top it all off she's been photographed by some of thee top notch photographers. So can you blame me for wondering why the heck she chose me! Once I got to her house all the nerves slowly began to dissolve -maybe it was the Dayquil kicking in (because of course I got struck with a horrible leaky nostril -yes only one! that same morning). Promise is just as cool as she looks! She is so down to earth, humble, sweet, kind, all the good characteristics a person can have - yeah she has em! She has a fun eclectic style that has no rhyme or reason and it totally goes with her! Not to mention she's freakin gawgeous and rocks the heck out of a picture! In my 3 years of photography she was definitely my easiest model! This girl is super natural and relaxed in front of the camera she made my job beyond easy! It was super fun shooting outside of my comfort zone too! I've never shot fashion before and its different from was I'm used to. The model doesn't look at your camera that often since its more about the clothing. Its kind of funny because years ago when I was researching poses for my own website profile pics I had included some of Promise's photos from her previous shoots for inspiration because of how natural she looked in them. Who would of thunk (yes I said "thunk") that I would actually be shooting this fun girl who has inspired me in so many creative ways! She's not only an amazing person, fashionista, web designer, but she's also great at interior design! Okay now that I've made myself sounds like a super fan, I'll stop talking now and you can check out the photos from her first outfit below. Visit Promise's blog for outfit details here.
Ive definitely dropped the ball the last few weeks -I was on a roll blogging weekly but I caught a horrible cold two weeks ago and it knocked me off of my blog game! And the cold has just been cycling through the family ever since. Ugh. When mama gets sick EVERYONE gets it! I even second shot a wedding with my friend right in the middle of it all!! For most of the day the Dayquil kept it under control but I did have my fare share of cough attacks at all of the wrong times -like in the middle of the vow exchange and the speeches! You know... the times where your supposed to be quiet not coughing up your lungs! I had to run out of the ceremony 3 times to avoid interrupting the whole wedding! Not fun! ... and then I went to Stagecoach last weekend and that made everything better! It was just the mini vaca we needed to revive us! Ill post more about that later... but today I want to share with you some photos from a mentor session that I had with the fabulous Meghan Weisman! I love her work its so clean and consistent! I know her images at first glance and I can only hope that one day people will be able to recognize my work without having to look at the watermark. That would be rad! The photography world is filled with so much talent and you constantly have to learn how to improve your business -not only by getting better gear but also by investing in workshops to improve your skills. She taught me more about lighting, playing with the sun to add that lovely glow to your images, and much more! It was such a great experience and she was super sweet and hilarious to hang with!

I'M JANELLE MARINA
Wife, Mama Shark, + Photographer. Most days, you'll find me in mismatched socks and a top knot, working behind my computer with a smile on my face, listening to Zac Brown Band and R&B --or, dancing in the kitchen with my 3 littles and hunka husband, seeing who could come up with the coolest dance moves. I'm a wedding photographer, West Elm lover, aspiring advocate for our buddies with special needs, and a Certified Dreamer since 1986. We live in a cozy city in Southern California and are always up for a good adventure. I enjoy telling stories with my camera, grubbing on spicy food, and solving the latest Dateline case.
